Due to weather conditions, all schools in the District will be CLOSED for instruction on Monday June 28.

The following message was sent from Superintendent Gina Niccoli-Moen to families of all students on Sunday June 27.

Dear Families,

With extreme weather, out of an abundance of caution all schools in the Burnaby School District will be closed for instruction for students on Monday June 28. Environment Canada is warning that record-breaking temperatures are resulting in a dangerous long-duration heat wave that will last through Monday.

I recognize the added inconvenience this may pose for families during what has already been a challenging time. Over the weekend District staff have been closely monitoring the extreme weather temperatures and the resulting heat levels within school buildings. The decision to close was made after careful consideration.

Unfortunately, the weather is also impacting events scheduled on Monday for Grades 7 and 12 school leaving ceremonies. For anyone with planned events on June 28, your school will be in touch with you directly.

Environment Canada and health authorities are warning British Columbians that this record-breaking heat event will increase the potential for heat-related illnesses. Little relief is expected at night with elevated overnight temperatures. Information from the BC Centre for Disease Control about warm weather safety in a time of COVID-19 can be found here.

We will continue to monitor the situation for Tuesday and ask that you check the District’s website at www.burnabyschools.ca and/or Twitter account @burnabyschools for an update.

Please take good care. Thank you, once again, for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Gina Niccoli-Moen, Superintendent
