Students’ Post-Secondary Horizons Ignited in Black Futures Program

More than 30 students from all eight of our high schools were involved in a program for Black youth designed to support post-secondary decisions and opportunities.

The University of British Columbia’s Black Futures program is put on in collaboration with school districts from across the province, including the Burnaby School District.

Over several months, the Grade 10-12 students participated in campus visits, information sessions, teamwork activities with peers from other cities, as well as hands-on practice with university admissions and application processes. The program ended in May and also included opportunities for mentorship from Black undergraduate students, faculty, and professionals in the community.

The UBC program is intended to open new horizons, including for those who may not have envisioned university as part of their academic futures, regardless of where students might choose to do their post-secondary.
