Goodbye and Hello Burnaby North Secondary

An opening celebration was held this month at Burnaby North Secondary with special guests, including the Minister of Education and Child Care.

Burnaby Board of Education Chair Bill Brassington spoke at the event:

This new building is already having an impact on the wider community. In addition to benefiting teenage students, the new school also has adult education through the District’s Burnaby Community and Continuing Education. Additionally, there’s a child care centre with early childhood educators, making it a place for everyone from toddlers to adults to learn.”

The Province provided $101.8 million and $2.2 million in ChildCareBC New Spaces funding to create 123 child care spaces. An additional $11.9 million was invested by the Burnaby School District, with the City of Burnaby contributing $664,000 toward child care.

Students have been in the new school since January. The move from the old school took place over Winter Break.

The holiday season was bittersweet for students and staff, as they held honoured traditions one last time in the old Burnaby North Secondary buildings.

To help orient people in their new building, North’s student government prepared a virtual tour, complete with drone footage. Watch it here.

Burnaby North Secondary is one of the largest schools in the province with space for approximately 1,800 students.
