Summer Session at Burnaby Schools remains a popular choice for students and their families, with more than 10,200 registrations. Children and youth get the chance to try something new, develop their skills, or get ahead for the upcoming school year.
Growing interest in the programs and classes has led to 200 more overall registrations, including secondary and elementary levels, than last year. For high school, this is partially due to the addition this year of two new afternoon camps for Grades 8 and 9.
District Principal Cesare Martino is responsible for leading Summer Session:
We recognize that there are lots of options out there for both elementary and secondary students over the school break. From the feedback we get from families, our program continues to be popular because parents appreciate the chance for their children to have fun learning opportunities with qualified teachers. We have dedicated staff who take great pride in the classes and experiences offered to students over the summer.”
Children and youth have been getting the chance to learn and explore through engaging classes, including art, photography, movie making, music, nature exploration, and hands-on technology-focused courses such as Engineering and Machines, Robotics, and Spheros. Many opt to learn practical skills such as Cooking, Sewing, or Woodworking.
Several high school students use Summer Session to earn credits in advance or explore elective courses that may not fit into their schedules during the regular school year.
Many choose to use Summer Session as a way to prepare for the next level of their educational journey, such as Get Ready for Grade 1 and Going into Grade 8, which helps students get more comfortable with the transition from elementary to high school.
With options from academic enrichment to trying a new skill and having fun, there is something for everyone.
Registration for Summer Session 2027 is expected to open next April.
