New Plan to Guide District’s Work

The Burnaby School District has a new Strategic Plan that will serve as a roadmap over the next five years, helping to guide priorities and the steps to achieve them.

Within the plan, the Burnaby Board of Education stated in their letter that it reflects collective aspirations for Burnaby Schools:

It is a blueprint for action, driven by the belief that every student deserves a learning environment where they feel safe, supported, and empowered to succeed.”

Foundational skills, such as literacy and numeracy, remain central. The new Strategic Plan builds on successes of previous work and articulates the District’s vision, mission, values, priorities, goals, and objectives.

The commitment to Truth and Reconciliation is prominent throughout, as stated in the plan, itself:

“Weaving through all of these priorities and centred as a core lens and pillar for all of our work is our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.”

As the plan was developed, Trustees embarked on an engagement process with the support of an outside organization to ensure that the resulting strategy reflected the needs of the community. More than 2900 students, staff, parents and caregivers, provided their thoughts through focus groups, surveys, and one-on-one interviews. A virtual Town Hall was also attended by hundreds of people.

The Burnaby Board of Education:

“We are deeply appreciative of the people who made time to share their thoughts about the District and schools. Their voices have shaped our priorities, ensuring that this plan is not just about them but truly for them.”

The Board also reiterated its commitment to advocating for funding and resources to support public education.

“We recognize that the work ahead will not be easy. With limited control over issues such as growth and funding for infrastructure, meeting our goals will require strong advocacy. But we are resolute.”

It will take many people to bring the plan to life. The Board expressed their gratitude to the District’s dedicated staff who work to support student success every day.
