Students and school staff throughout the District are finding ways to support the community and each other. What follows are some of the many recent examples of initiatives at both secondary and elementary schools.
Grade 9 and 10 students in a Skills Explorations class at Burnaby Mountain Secondary turned a framing project into something local children could enjoy. They built pre-school sized picnic tables and donated them to a child care centre near the school.
Moscrop Secondary students volunteered for a neighbourhood cleanup. They connected with the opportunity through their careers program, and as part of their participation in the Burnaby Neighbourhood House Future Leaders program.
Students at Confederation Park Elementary in the Boomerang Leadership Club enjoyed creating individual “Kindness Gardens.” They gifted the terrariums complete with misting bottles to seniors who live in a nearby housing complex.
A Clinton Elementary student in Grade 4 is being recognized as a kindness leader. Hanishka submitted a winning entry to the Canadian Kindness Leaders Project contest for her idea to spread kindness, beginning with a box. Her vision was to have a kindness box in every class for students to share acts of kindness by peers, have a name drawn each week from the box, and have the selected student get to be the classroom’s special helper. At Gilmore Community School on the final day of World Autism Month in April, the school shared a video. It included a special thank you from the Canucks Autism Network to the students for their fundraising, acceptance and awareness building efforts.
