Students and staff at Kitchener and Brentwood Park Elementary schools are returning this fall to exciting news that construction is underway to make their schools bigger.
The Ministry of Infrastructure committed a combined total of $76.3 million toward the expansions to support the fast-growing neighbourhoods. The additions will mean 500 more seats for students at Kitchener Elementary and 165 new seats, as well as seismic upgrades at Brentwood Park Elementary.
Burnaby Board of Education Chair Kristin Schnider:
This critical investment in classroom space comes at a time when our community is growing rapidly. By working in close partnership with the Province, we’re addressing enrolment pressures and creating the learning environments that Burnaby students and staff need. We know these investments not only benefit today’s learners, but will also support the needs of our whole community in the years ahead.”
The projects were brought forward by the Burnaby School District to the Province for funding in alignment with the strategy in the District’s Long-Range Facilities Plan. It lays out a roadmap of the Board’s plans for infrastructure, including addressing the pressure placed on school buildings by enrolment growth.
With funding support from the Province, construction is also expected to start this school year on additions at Nelson Elementary and Alpha Secondary.
