Schools have been enjoying the magic of the season. What follows are some examples of the many ways students have been getting into the holiday spirit.
Children in Kindergarten through Grade 7 at Clinton Elementary were inspired after reading The Gift of Everything, by Patrick McDonnell. The book shares how the more you look, the more you find that “everything is a gift,” in everyone, everywhere, in every day. The students wrote what they consider their most special gifts on tags that they hung on trees throughout the Library Learning Commons.
A girls’ group at Edmonds Community School had fun making holiday crafts at lunch – including gingerbread houses and personalized stockings – with activities provided by the Salvation Army. Youth leaders at Alpha Secondary created a display for their peers to learn about winter celebrations from around the world, including Christmas, Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Yalda and more.
Several schools enjoyed pancake breakfasts. The one at Taylor Park Elementary was provided by Burnaby Firefighters and was a highlight for children. The Parent Advisory Committee supported the event, which included a visit from none other than Santa Claus. Teenagers at Burnaby Central Secondary got into the season with their very own a Breakfast with Santa, and students at Cariboo Hill Secondary also enjoyed a pancake breakfast with friends.
A festive winter wonderland awaited a Grade 2 class from Kitchener Elementary at the top of Grouse Mountain. A Grade 6/7 class at Buckingham Elementary perfected their very own grinch with a holiday art project.
Young innovators in Grade 6 and 7 at Armstrong Elementary showcased their creativity and business ideas at the Entrepreneur Fair. Several students at Montecito Elementary were also vendors at their Merry Market. Along with local artisans, the community was welcomed into the school as the holiday season began.
