School Expansion Also Supports Child Care

The University Highlands Elementary community was joined at the end of January by special guests to mark their new expansion. The addition brings eight new classrooms and space for child care within the school. The classrooms create room for 195 students in the growing community located on Burnaby Mountain.

Gary Wong, Board Chair, Burnaby Board of Education:

Word has gotten out about this thriving, close-knit community and how great it is to be on Burnaby Mountain. So much so that our school needed to grow… Growth comes with other needs, including child care.”

77 children now have before and after school care right in University Highlands. The expansion project further enabled the Simon Fraser University Childcare Society to create 27 additional child care spaces.

Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Childcare:

Partnerships like this one are giving parents more options for high-quality learning
environments for their kids, as well as the convenience that comes with having child care on
school grounds.”

Sarah Borsa, University Highlands parent and Chair of the Parent Advisory Council:

We are thrilled with the expansion of the school. We want to continue to build this community and we really feel very fortunate to have child care on site.”

The project is a partnership between the Government of BC, SFU Child care Society, SFU Community Trust, and the Burnaby School District.
