The spring sports season saw many Burnaby Schools athletes reach the podium, earning medals and delivering strong performances at the highest level of school sport competition. Additionally, students across the District gained valuable experiences and learning through competition and play.
Moscrop Secondary’s athletes took the male and female gold at Provincials in the 1500 metre Walk Race. Both went on to compete at Nationals and each won at the highest level, bringing home gold medals. In Provincials for racewalking, a Cariboo Hill Secondary athlete captured silver in the Senior Girls 1500 metre.
There was much success in hockey, with Burnaby Mountain Secondary’s team taking the BC Hockey Tier 3 cup, and Burnaby North Secondary capturing the cup for Tier 1. In ball hockey, Burnaby Central Secondary was featured in the news after winning the provincial championship.
In Netball, Moscrop Secondary’s Junior Girls Team brought home the Provincial Championship title. Burnaby North Secondary’s Senior Team won bronze, while their Junior Team earned silver. Burnaby North’s Senior Ultimate Team took silver at the AAA Provincials.
In relay races in track, the Junior Girls Team at Burnaby North Secondary won bronze in the 4 x 100 metre, and silver in the 4 x 400 metre race. Burnaby Central Secondary’s Grade 8 Boys 4 x 100 metre Relay Team earned silver. The Junior Boys 4 x 400 metre Relay Team at Burnaby Mountain Secondary took bronze at Provincials.
An athlete at Cariboo Hill Secondary brought home silver in track in the Senior Boys 400 metre race. In the Junior Boys Shotput, an athlete from Byrne Creek Community School also earned silver. Moscrop Secondary hosted Provincials for Badminton. Their own Boys Team finished 7th, while their Girls Team took 8th place in all of BC.
Burnaby Mountain Secondary’s Unified Basketball Team competed in the Special Olympics BC Provincial Jamboree. Burnaby Mountain’s team also hosted the finals for the District’s Unified Basketball league. Learn more about unified sport in Burnaby Schools here.
Elementary students across Burnaby Schools had the chance to participate in track to develop their athleticism, sportsmanship, communication, and team-building skills. Their efforts were tested, and fun was had at District Elementary Track Meets.
