Taking Pride in Diversity

There are a variety of opportunities in Burnaby Schools during Pride Month and beyond to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and being proud of who you are. When students feel represented, supported, respected, welcome and safe, they are more engaged in learning. What follows are some recent activities and events.

Maywood Community School hosted the District’s annual Family Pride Picnic. This year’s event – which welcomes all families – was the largest yet, with more than 200 people attending.

The Pride Club at Lakeview Elementary created a welcoming window display. Students at Brentwood Park Elementary focused on a sense of belonging for everyone, with a Rainbow Dance Party and other learning opportunities.

Cameron Elementary had several activities, including a Pride Walk. Children at Taylor Park had a Be You celebration, where all students were encouraged to wear clothing that represents them, and to be proud of being: “uniquely you.”

Several schools acknowledged Pride Month with a flag raising, including Taylor Park Elementary and Burnaby Central Secondary.

At the District’s annual IDAHAT Breakfast, students came together to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. The event, held at Burnaby Mountain Secondary, included workshops and speakers.
