Each year, French Immersion schools in the District get into the spirit of Carnaval.
The Québec winter festival is one of the oldest and largest in the world and is held annually over several days in February. The celebrations provide a chance for students to learn while experiencing French-Canadian culture and cuisine.
For example, Kindergarten students at École Marlborough Elementary got to try crêpes and traditional maple taffy, or la tire d’érable, made at school in the traditional way on a bed of icy snow.
Elementary students from several schools enjoyed a visit at École Cariboo Hill Secondary where students participated in cultural activities.
École Moscrop Secondary also hosted several elementary schools. As at Cariboo Hill, one of the highlights was a visit from the Carnival ambassador, Bonhomme.
French Immersion students at Moscrop were among those who seized the chance to travel to Quebec to be fully immersed in French.
After much preparation, Grade 7 students at École Brantford Elementary also made the trip. As part of their learning, they’ve taken part in guided activities at the Plains of Abraham, visited the Wendat Huron site, and explored Old Québec and the famous ice hotel.
