Burnaby Schools celebrate Family Literacy Week every January (or early February), which is acknowledged in different ways around the province. The week was created to highlight the benefits of reading and writing skills for all family members.
As part of the week’s activities, many schools invited guest readers to share their favourite books with students. Local firefighters, RCMP Youth Officers, SFU athletes, and the District’s trustees and staff are just some of those who came to our schools to share their love of reading. Guests at Stoney Creek Community School included local journalists Cornelia Naylor from the Burnaby Now and Global TV’s Anne Drewa.
Kids and parents participated in an all day read-a-thon at Brentwood Park Elementary, many in their pj’s. Fun-filled activities kept big and little buddies busy reading, writing, and sharing at Twelfth Avenue Elementary. And reading in the dark at Morley Elementary were just some of the highlights.
Students in the District’s Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program celebrated Family Literacy Week by learning some educational games to play with family at home.
Literacy skills can be boosted with just 15 minutes of reading each day. Reading as a family or engaging in fun literacy activities promotes confidence and strengthens connections.
