The efforts of a Kindergarten class connected to World Kindness Day were spread far and wide, when a video of their infectious dance of joy went practically viral.
The children from Seaforth Elementary are one of many groups of students throughout the District that used World Kindness Day as an opportunity to talk about caring behaviour and the culture we work to create together every day in our schools.
The students committed several acts of kindness, including a public display with signs asking drivers to “honk for kindness” near a local SkyTrain station, providing coffee and goodies to the construction crew working on the seismic upgrade for their school, and creating thank you cards for healthcare workers. They also did a dance choreographed by Gurdeep Pandher, Yukon’s Bhangra-dancing online sensation. That dance was liked by thousands of people and viewed by almost 60,000 on Twitter.

Other classes have also had a focus on kindness. Over at Taylor Park Elementary, Grade 4 students joined in on the fun with their kindness dance. At Brentwood Park Elementary, students are gearing up to spread kindness to seniors with special handmade clay ornaments they’re working on for holiday season hampers. Kindergarten and Grade 1 students at South Slope Elementary spread positivity throughout the school with kindness messages. And at Chaffey-Burke Elementary, as part of their kindness efforts last month, students in Grades 4 and 5 wrote thank you cards to staff working in the Emergency Room at Burnaby Hospital. The children received this message back from healthcare workers, along with a photo of them appreciating the cards.

There are many initiatives and activities in schools throughout the year across the District that explore kindness and respect for others.
