Student Art Showcased at Burnaby Art Gallery

The work of student artists from Kindergarten to Grade 12 is on display at the Burnaby Art Gallery as part of two exhibitions. The inspiration for both was taken from living through a global pandemic.

Burnaby Board of Education Chair Jen Mezei:

Art has always been a way to express and process emotions and thoughts. It is incredible to see how our talented students have found artistic inspiration from living through a global pandemic and channeled it into beautiful and creative works of art. We’re grateful to the Burnaby Art Gallery for their partnership that allows elementary and high school students in the District to elevate their learning, and to bring their creations to a wider audience through a professional gallery exhibition.”

Arts Alive
This marks the 39th edition of Arts Alive, an annual exhibition put on in partnership that has helped elevate creative opportunities for students.

This year, Arts Alive features student work from Kindergarten to Grade 7 from across the district, on display until June 6. The theme for artist inspiration is connection. Students were asked to explore how we find connection Together While Apart. They were encouraged to experiment and collaborate with a sense of joy and play using a variety of mediums from felt to clay.

Artist Apprenticeship Program
Six secondary students also have their work featured in the upper gallery as part of the Artist Apprenticeship Program. The exhibition’s title, Connecting on Unstable Ground, explores how we can connect when separation is necessary.

Students who are interested in pursuing fine arts as a career have an opportunity to be mentored by professional artists, curators and programmers. The exhibition is one aspect of this career exploration. The students from Byrne Creek, Moscrop, Burnaby Mountain, Cariboo Hill, Central and Burnaby South secondary schools, took part in the program during the winter and spring of 2021.

Seeing the Exhibitions
The students’ art can be viewed at the Burnaby Art Gallery until the exhibition closes on June 6. Viewings are by appointment only, due to COVID-19. Entrance is by donation. More information about the Gallery’s hours, location, and pandemic protocols can be found here.
