Raising Diverse Student Voices and Opportunities

There have been several recent initiatives providing students with opportunities to share their voices and come together to create a better future for everyone.

Cross Cultural Symposium on Anti-Racism

Earlier this month the District cohosted the seventh annual Cross Cultural Symposium on Anti-Racism for students in Grades 6 to 12 from across Metro Vancouver.

More than 1200 people connected virtually, as children and youth – alongside cultural leaders – expressed what they need to be their true and authentic selves at school.

Collaborating with UBC on Black Futures Program

Nearly two dozen Black students from secondary schools across the District participated in a program designed to ignite post-secondary horizons. From October to May, the youth in Grades 10 to 12 visited the University of British Columbia campus to learn about and imagine what university life might look like for them.

Hosted by UBC in collaboration with school districts across the province, the UBC Black Futures program included tours and hands-on practice with the admissions and application processes. Students also participated in information sessions, lectures, and teamwork activities with peers from other cities. There were also opportunities to interact with Black undergraduate students, faculty, and professionals in the community who answered questions and offered support.
