The District’s Science and Trailblazer Speaker Series, brings in top scientists from Canada and the US. The first session last week at Burnaby South captured the interest of 60 District students who are pursuing a career in Science and 15 teachers. It featured Dr. Andrew Fire – a scientist who shared the Nobel Prize in 2006 for the discovery of a mechanism in cells that shuts down the expression genes. It provides an early hope that one day a gene for disease in humans, animals and plants can be silenced. He presented students with the exact scenario that led to his discovery and through interactive questioning got them into critical thinking mode to problem solve. Thank you Dr. Fire for sharing your passion and inspiring our learners. LEARN MORE
