Fresh Learning in the Great Outdoors

Students throughout the District are learning about sustainability, exploring outdoors and building connection with the environment.

Students of all ages at Nelson Elementary planted Indigenous trees. They worked as a community with help from the District’s maintenance crew. The plantings were part of their school-wide efforts to connect with the land and honour Truth and Reconciliation.

Children at Kitchener Elementary led a Stream of Dreams project. The painted wooden fish can be seen on their school fence and help to raise awareness about protecting waterways and the wildlife that depend on them. As part of the project, a group of students also participated in a community clean-up. Learn more about Stream of Dreams installations elsewhere in the District here.

Kindergarten students at University Highlands Elementary have been enjoying exploring near the school during “Forest Fridays.” Also at University Highlands, a Grade 4/5 class worked to upcycle newspapers and plastic bags into “sit-upons.” The woven waterproof mats were created for the students’ outdoor gardening sessions.

The Green Team at Cariboo Hill Secondary gathered to harvest their potatoes and planted garlic. The student-led club’s earlier work includes presentations to their peers about recycling at school. Learn more here.
