STEM for Girls

200 girls in grades 6, 7 and 8 got together for Stem4Girls Days – a first time event held at Cariboo Hill Secondary. Offered to Burnaby Schools students over two days, in partnership with IBM, girls are given the opportunity to be inspired by female mentors who work in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The girls get to do some fun activities and hear from women working in fields like pharmacology, engineering, and the video game industry.

According to 2015-16 provincial statistics, women represented 53% of post-secondary students, but only 37% of STEM-related credentials were issued to women.

Said well by Mitzi Dean, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity: “We all benefit when women and girls are empowered to follow their dreams. Encouraging gender equity in the tech fields of science, technology, engineering and math will have a lasting, positive impact on BC’s economy, as well as our society.”
