Massive Medal Haul at Regional World Scholar’s Cup

Burnaby South students went to the World Scholar’s Cup, held in Vancouver in May, and left with a fist full of medals.

The World Scholar’s Cup is an international team academic program, with students participating from more than 82 countries. The competition is comprised of three rounds: regional, global, and final. It combines debate, collaborative writing, multiple choice and a multimedia quiz to motivate students to focus on more than their existing skills or areas of strength in order to discover new ones.

Burnaby South sent a group of Grade 11 students to participate. Sophie Liu, Catherine Wang and Azzam Haq, Olivia He, and Karry Jiang came back with a combined 13 medals from the various events of the competition. Of particular note:

  • Sophie came in first, overall, as the top individual “scholar” of the tournament;
  • Catherine came in first, overall, in the individual writing competition;
  • the Burnaby South team came in first place in the team writing competition; and
  • the team took eighth place, overall, in the tournament.

Due to their achievement, several of the students have been invited to attend one of the upcoming Global Rounds of the World Scholar’s Cup. If they choose to go, they could participate in Beijing, The Hague, Sydney, or Manila.
