Pink Shirt Day: Everyone Belongs

Students across the District have been participating in Pink Shirt Day activities that promote kindness, respect for one another, and celebrate diversity.

For example, children at Brentwood Park Elementary chose a “Let Kindness Grow” theme to mark the day. They ended with a Kindness Parade in the community. Many students throughout the District created displays to share their learning and build awareness of the day. See photos below.

Student voice was an important part of assemblies, which were held at numerous schools including Kitchener, Brantford and Confederation Park Elementary. At South Slope Elementary, students gathered to sing “This is Me” with lyrics highlighting kindness, care and acceptance.

The Burnaby Board of Education sent a letter to families, sharing how Pink Shirt Day continues to serve as a reminder that homophobia and transphobia have no place in Burnaby schools.

The Burnaby Board of Education wants each of our schools and workplaces to be welcoming and safe spaces for all students, their families, and every staff member. This fundamental belief extends to everyone, including those who identify as members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. When individuals are empowered to show up as their authentic selves and are valued for who they are, it strengthens our entire community and enhances learning engagement.”
