One of the opportunities the Burnaby School District strives to give students each year is career exploration – a chance to try something new and see if it sparks interest or joy.
Design an Ad
Grade 6 and 7 students at several schools tried their hand at marketing when they created an advertisement for a local company or organization. The career exploration opportunity culminated with chosen ads published by the Burnaby Now in a special feature published at the end of March called Design an Ad – see it in full here.
Mind Over Metal
A group of Grade 8-12 students from across the District participated in a Spring Break welding camp called Mind Over Metal. This opportunity for hands-on learning and career exploration is offered to students who would benefit the most and might not otherwise get the opportunity to attend such a program. It is put on by the British Columbia Institute of Technology in partnership with the District and the Canadian Welding Bureau Foundation.
Creativity with ADST
In our classrooms, you’ll find students delving into Applied Design, Skills and Technologies or ADST. It provides hands-on learning through design and creation, encouraging children and youth to stretch their creative and critical thinking – skills that support success both now and in their future careers.
Programs of Choice
At the high school level, there are dozens of additional career exploration opportunities, with diverse Programs of Choice offerings including video game design, trades, hairstyling, tourism, sports academies, cyber security, health sciences, and exploring the world of engineering. Some Career Education options even allow students to earn wages, along with credits toward graduation.
