Students Win National and International Science Fairs

Secondary students from the Burnaby School District represented BC and Canada at Science Fairs in May and won.

National Silver Medal

Grade 12 student Wendy Fang was awarded silver in the Canada-Wide Science Fair. The École Moscrop Secondary student’s project is an allergy-sufferers’ dream: an air monitoring system for pollen. This is how Wendy described her project:

The objective of this study was to design a system that is able to provide real-time personal pollen concentration estimates at any location and at any time…The devices are not only inexpensive to manufacture and operate but provide dependable and accurate reports. The PollenGPS system is a boon for pollen concentration monitoring in our community, workplace, and even as an aid for environmental scientific research.”

Additionally, Wendy received another honour when her design was selected for the official pin of the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

International Grand Award

With more than 1400 projects by students from 64 countries around the world, a team of Burnaby North Secondary students won 4th at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, earning “Grand Award” status. The project by Grade 11 students Rowan Ross and William Li focuses on extracting microplastics from water.
